An explicit OWL representation of ISO/OGC Observations and Measurements

چکیده

We have developed OWL ontologies for the ISO/OGC model for Observations, and for other standard geographic information schemas (geometry, time, metadata) upon which it depends. Translation from the original UML to OWL follows the ISO 19150-2 rules. The ontologies have been prepared standalone, to respect the ‘upper ontology’ implied by the ISO UML profile and ISO General Feature Model, and thus avoid introducing external bias. Mapping to other ontologies, such as the SSN ontology, can be done subsequently in RDFS and OWL axioms, and maintained as linksets separate from the structure model. A key issue is whether the OWL representation should exactly reproduce the frame-based UML model from the standard, or be an open-world OWL representation of some underlying model. This affects property scoping and object property restrictions. The latter choice requires more interpretation during conversion. Two incompatible ontologies have been developed through following both approaches.

Ontology for observations and sampling features, with alignments to existing models

We introduce new OWL ontologies for observations and sampling features, based on the O&M conceptual model from OGC and ISO 19156. Previous efforts, (a) through the W3C SSN project, and (b) following ISO rules for conversion from UML, had dependencies on elaborate pre-existing ontologies and frameworks. The new ontologies, known as om-lite and sam-lite, remove such dependencies, and can therefor...

Grids and Beyond: Netcdf-cf and Iso/ogc Features and Coverages

The larger effort began when a number of communities (the CDM work at Unidata, the CSML work at BADC, and the OGC Sensor Web Enablement Observations and Measurements) realized they were developing similar lists of data types. The combined list includes: 1) grid, 2) point/station observation, 3) vertical profile/sounding, 4) trajectory, 5) swath, and 6) radar/radial. This paper details the curre...

Ontological Analysis of Observations and Measurements

Geographic information is based on observations or measurements. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has developed an implementation specification for observations and measurements (O&M). It specifies precisely how to encode information. Yet, the O&M conceptual model does not specify precisely which real-world entities are denoted by the specified information objects. We provide formal semanti...

Field Spectroscopy Metadata System Based on ISO and OGC Standards

Field spectroscopy has undergone a remarkable growth over the past two decades in terms of use and application to different scientific disciplines. This work presents an important step forward to improve the interoperability for the spectral library interchange in the field spectroscopy scientific community, by establishing an XML-based metadata system using published International Organization...

The Object Management Group Ontology Definition Metamodel

This paper is an overview of the Object Management Group effort to develop a standard Ontology Development Metamodel using the OMG’s MetaObject Facility. The ODM includes metamodels for the W3C RDF/OWL representation language, the ISO Topic Maps system, and the ISO Common Logic, together with UML Profiles for RDF/OWL and Topic Maps, and mappings between each of the systems and OWL Full. The ODM...
